Iconography Workshop

Might this be possible?

Boston-area, August 29 through September 3: iconography workshop. It would cost $850 for retreatants, $715 for commuters. And it's not far...

A brief "Lord, have mercy" intercession would be appreciated.

No joke. You could rent a sizeable moving truck for 5 days for that kind of money.

Here I was, thinking it wasn't so much money, as I'd been considering one about a year ago for over $1000. I mean, for a whole week, learning how to pray better and give the world another window to God ...

Not that that makes it any more affordable, since I'd need to take off a week from work.

I wonder why they're so expensive. Is it the materials? Gold leaf isn't cheap, I guess.

I imagine much of it is the materials. Check out iconofile.com: the icons there sell for about $700-$1000 easily. Egg tempera (excellent explanatory site) is a medium for which the pigments must be mixed as you go (somewhat like a fresco), so you have to get the supplies to mix them: things like lapis lazuli (one of the most expensive) and hematite, cinnabar and umber.

I would expect that the rest of the cost as the teacher's experience, as well as the difficulty in selling hand-painted icons. (While many people and churches would like to have them, at hundreds of dollars, they're not exactly something which most people would pick up without budgeting for.)

Can you give the details of the iconography workshop? I think I'd like to attend!
